If the Sanctuary of Covadonga is an inexcusable place to visit, both for visitors and for Asturians, this year there are still more reasons.
In September, the beginning of the Jubilar Mariano year of the Virgin of Covadonga was inaugurated. “La Satina”, is not only the patron saint of Asturias: according to the legend , the Virgin sheltered the army of Don Pelayo in the “battle of Covadonga”, whose victory marked the beginning of the Reconquest. This year we are celebrating since 8 September the centenary of her coronation.
The Jubilee was granted (both to the Virgin and to the Chils Jesus that he carries in his lap) by Pope Benedict XV, following the request of the Bishop of Oviedo Javier Baztán y Urniza, coinciding with the commemoration of the twelfth centenary of the Battle of Covadonga . The coronation was presided over in 1918 by the Asturian Cardinal Victoriano Guisasola y Menéndez, Archbishop of Toledo, in the presence of the kings Alfonso XIII and Victoria.
